Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme

HARP is a major scheme to maintain drinking water supplies across Cumbria, Lancashire and Greater Manchester for future generations. The Haweswater Aqueduct is a 110km pipeline which runs from the Lake District, through Lancashire and into Greater Manchester. Completed in the 1950s, the pipeline needs essential maintenance to ensure it can continue to supply customers for generations to come.

Latest Update

Our biggest infrastructure upgrade in over a century is underway, helping to create a more resilient water and wastewater network across the North West, bringing environmental transformation that improves 500km of the region’s rivers, creating new jobs and supporting local businesses.

The Haweswater Aqueduct Resilience Programme (HARP) is a major part of our upgrade plans which will involve the replacement of over 50 kilometres of tunnel sections on the aqueduct. The programme is being delivered by Cascade Infrastructure and their design and build partner STRABAG UK.

Detailed design is now taking place following the completion of ground investigation and environmental survey works.

The initial programme of work has now been developed. Due to the scale of the programme, the works will be delivered in phases. This means that start and finish dates of works will vary by location and to ensure efficient delivery, may be subject to change as works progress. As this is the case, we will regularly update this page with the latest information.
