Altrincham Public Realm
What was delivered
To assist in a sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) scheme being developed across three streets in Trafford, United Utilities helped fund the provision of SuDS components in Altrincham.
This involved planting rain gardens, low-maintenance wildlife friendly spaces, which work to capture and store water. Using plants which are good at retaining high levels of rainwater over a short period of time can reduce pressure on our water systems during periods of high rainfall. The raingardens were designed to complement the 15 new trees which were planted as part of the regeneration project. Tree pits work in a similar manner, and help to provide habitats for hundreds of species, whilst capturing carbon and making oxygen.
Porous asphalt was used for new paving and cycle lanes which captures rainwater at the surface and retains it for longer, something that conventional concrete is unable to achieve. Seating with information was also provided to educate the public about the project and to promote positive attitudes towards the new regeneration project and further projects in the future.
What was the impact
Overall, this allowed Trafford Council and United Utilities to work in collaboration to implement nature for Altrincham’s residents to enjoy, whilst protecting against flooding using various methods of slowing surface water run off to reduce the stress on our combined sewers during periods of heavy rainfall. The implementation of SuDS has already been seen as a success as there is significantly less rainfall being directed into Goose Green Square, and no flooding complaints have been issued.
