Residents invited to learn more about scheme to improve water quality in the River Irk

United Utilities is offering the public the chance to find out more about its plans to improve water quality in the River Irk.

The Aspin Lane storm over flow scheme in Manchester will reduce the frequency of storm overflow operations enhancing the health of the local water course while also reducing the rainfall entering the sewers.

As part of the project, surface water will be separated from foul water. That means any rainwater from roofs, roads and open spaces in the vicinity will be redirected into to the River Irk, ensuring foul water - from toilets, kitchens, and bathrooms - flow to the sewer for treatment.

The company will be carrying out ground investigation from Monday 2 February, for up to four weeks along Corporation Street and Aspin Lane with main construction to start immediately after and continue until summer 2026.

While construction work is carried out – and to keep the public safe - the inside lane on Corporation Street will be closed. Traffic lights remain unaffected but increased traffic should be expected.

Residents are being encouraged to find out more about the scheme and its benefits at a drop-in event being held on Tuesday, 27 January from 4pm to 7pm at Pot Kettle Black, Angel Gardens, 1 Rochdale Road, Manchester M4 4GE.
