Denton Holme water works set for August finish

Water refurbishment roadworks in Carlisle’s Denton Holme area are on track for completion by mid-August.

United Utilities recommenced working in the Denton Holme area on 3 July, having been given permission to proceed by the council.

Robert Atkinson is coordinating the project for United Utilities and explained: “In an ideal world we would have completed this part of the city’s water network upgrade last December, but we had to pull off site to allow the emergency demolition of the hotel on Victoria Viaduct.

“We’ve been in constant discussion with the council throughout lockdown, and we were asked not to restart our work in the Denton Holme area until all our work was finished on Warwick Road and the council had finished their work on James Street.

“The good news is that we should have finished here and the roads will open again by mid-August.  Shops in the area are very much open for business and we thank the owners for their patience in the meantime.”

• Charlotte Street traffic lights – Work should be completed here by Thursday 16 July.
• Randall Street Road Closure – From 16 July the junction of Randall Street and Charlotte Street will be closed for up to two weeks. The usual one way system on Lorne Street will be removed temporarily so that traffic can exit around this work.
• Denton Street Road Closure – This should be completed around mid-August.
• Milbourne Street Road Closure – This should be completed around mid-August.

The project will ensure Carlisle city centre has a fully modernised water pipe network, meaning improved water quality and fewer leaks for decades to come.

It forms part of a £14 million upgrade for the city by United Utilities.
