Why has spill frequency and duration increased from 2022 to 2023?

2023 was an exceptionally wet year. We saw a 26% increase in rainfall compared to 2022 and 15% more days in the year with rain than the previous year. Constant high rainfall means that sewers are constantly operating at or near capacity – a relatively small amount of extra rainfall can cause an overflow to operate if the network is never getting time to drain down.
